The ten facts

1. You live under roughly four dozen concurrent national emergencies. The oldest — Iran, 1979 — is older than most Americans.
2. 'National emergency' is a legal switch, not a description of the world. Flipping it unlocks ~137 extra statutory powers, most on signature alone.
3. Congress is required to vote on every emergency every six months. It has done this zero times since 1976.
4. Emergencies auto-renew with a one-page notice — like subscriptions nobody cancels.
5. Most emergencies are boring sanctions plumbing. The boring ones normalized the tool for the ambitious ones.
6. Nothing is hidden. No suspended Constitution, no citizen-declared-enemy, no secret account. Also no comfort: openness hasn't constrained it.
7. Ending one over a president's objection effectively takes a veto-proof supermajority. The default is perpetual.
8. The 2025 tariffs were emergency powers on your receipts — until the Supreme Court struck them down in February 2026. The program moved statutes within four days.
9. The Insurrection Act sits entirely outside this framework. No declaration, no review, no sunset.
10. About 56 pre-drafted secret emergency orders (PEADs) exist and have never been shown to Congress.

Method

The registry of emergencies is hand-curated from the Brennan Center's tracker, the Federal Register, and primary documents. Renewal records are pulled nightly from the Federal Register API (public, no key). LAPSE WATCH flags any active emergency approaching its anniversary with no continuation notice on file — under the NEA, that means automatic termination.
